An oncogene is a gene carried by a virus that
induces a cell to divide abnormally, giving
rise to a cancer. Oncogenes arise from
mutations in genes (proto-oncogenes) found in
all normal cells. They are usually also found
in viruses that are capable of transforming
normal cells to tumour cells. Such viruses
are able to insert their oncogenes into the
host cell's DNA, causing it to divide
uncontrollably.
