  1. An oncogene is a gene carried by a virus that 
  2. induces a cell to divide abnormally, giving 
  3. rise to a cancer. Oncogenes arise from 
  4. mutations in genes (proto-oncogenes) found in 
  5. all normal cells. They are usually also found 
  6. in viruses that are capable of transforming 
  7. normal cells to tumour cells. Such viruses 
  8. are able to insert their oncogenes into the 
  9. host cell's DNA, causing it to divide 
  10. uncontrollably.
